Mochitsuki and the grasshopper

Mochitsuki celebration was on Sunday. Mochi pounding, taiko, traditional dance and break dancing. The organizers did an exceptional job.
This little grasshopper is by artist Brian Elliot. He just finished it. It's a companion piece for a vintage 50's Studebaker. Brian will also be contributing a piece for the April show at Compound titled "Triptych".

I was in Chicago a couple weeks ago. I grew up in this area. Coming into the city was always an adventure when you group up in rural Indiana. I always think cities don't change. They have their standard and static historic landmarks and tourist attractions. The last two times I was in Chicago I never ventured downtown. I just stayed up on the North side with friends. On this trip my family wanted to meet for lunch downtown. We took the blue line into the city and I was shocked by all the changes. Millennium Park is what the area off of Michigan ave is called now. The Jay Pritzker pavillion is a building designed by Frank Gehry. It stands in stark contrast to the older buildings of the city. The crown fountain with these two video towers that spew water. The Cloud Gate (the bean) by Anish Kapoor. While I was in Chicago there was a contemporary Chinese sculpture garden with some super nice stuff. I know most people are aware of these things. The have been around for at least 5 years. In my mind I wrote off Chicago as any sort of innovator in city planning or public art. I was obviously wrong. The downtown looks awesome. I think the resulting lack of street repair in the north side neighborhoods was worth it.......... maybe not.

Camilla d'Errico is a product of her split heritage, Italian and Canadian rolled into one: Italian fiestiness, Canadian politeness, and an early addiction to Saturday morning cartoons and comics. Her first love was and still is comics. Growing up she was more often doodling sexy damsels and dragons on her textbooks than reading them. In 1998, Camilla first attended her first San Diego Comic Con where upon the moment she walked through the doors she realised that a 9–5 day job would kill her and this was what she wanted to do.
After a few years in the comic industry Camilla expanded her style into a variety of other ventures: snowboard decals, magazine covers, toys, clothes and the pop art gallery scene. Thanks to her relentless energy, dedication, and sleep deprivation, she has followed her dream of working creatively for a living. Thursday was another super night at Compound. The economy be damned! Ippei and Joe made some incredible art. It was a beautiful spring night in Portland and hundreds of people came out to show their love for the artists. It was the first time that I had back to back shows with Japanese artists. Both shows were a great success. This year I want to keep pushing forward in promoting Japanese artists as well as artists from all over the world. It's been really positive so far. Upcoming this year we have some awesome artists from Japan. Look for shows with Rei Mochizuki, Hooky, Kana Ohtsuki, Katsuya Terada and "strange bedfellows" Japanese/American collaboration show. Belmont Garage

Tenga, Shohei and Imaone painted the Belmont Garage today. The Belmont Garage is a local legal graffiti spot. They saw all forms of weather today....... snow, rain, cold and sun. Nothing stopped them. In the end the building turned out beautifully. I need to thank everyone who helped the boys out during their stay in Portland. Especially Paige at Breeze Block, Six, Tour and Brian. They rolled out the rose red carpet.

The guys were invited to paint in south west Portland tonight with local writer TOUR. It's really interesting to witness these guys getting to paint in a foreign environment. For the first hour it seems really uncomfortable. I could see them trying to figure out how to make their style fit with TOUR's work that was already up. It does not help that there is a bit of a language barrier. Just when it seemed like it would not work out, they start painting. Just like magic....... suddenly the art started to flow. I wanted to post my top 5 lists of 2008. I know that it is already the 13th of January. I have been busy. 2008 was an exceptional year at Compound. It has been a year since I took over as full time curator at Compound. I worked on shows in the fall of 2007, but 2008 is the official starting point. It's difficult to express how great it has been. I have the opportunity to pick the artists I want and push the gallery in new directions. The Compound crew is invaluable. Big thanks to Katsu, Colten, Chris, Ira, Ren and Dell. Portland Night

Just back from Tokyo. Last night was first Thursday. We have three amazing artists in from Japan. Ina Takayuki, Kaz and Gakiya. It was tight getting everything up and ready. We just got back from Tokyo the morning before. Portland Night was amazing. I want to thank all of our friends who came out to support us. The good news........ We will be producing two Portland Nights in Tokyo next year. I am super excited to make this project grow and grow. The media surf crew were incredible hosts. The standouts were Kurosaki san and Matsui. The challenges of promoting and producing an art show in a foreign country are numerous. In the end it was more than worth it. I can't wait to do it again. Here are a few pics. I will update the compound website this weekend with all the photos. Check back.

The Adidas Consortium group consists of elite boutiques around the world, and this year, Compound has proudly joined its ranks. Along with 22 other stores, Adidas tapped Compound to be a part of the “AZX Project”, and design our own version of the Adidas ZX model. With a choice of seventeen different ZX models as our palette, we chose to run with the ZX500. The result was a design inspired by the Portland culture we sleep, eat, and breath. Lasered roses represent Portland’s nickname, “the City of Roses”, and the insole of the shoe is a topography shot of downtown Portland with an arrow pinpointing Compound’s location in Old Town. The colors: scarlet, black, and white, pay homage to our beloved NBA team, the Portland Trailblazers. Denim fabric was chosen to reflect the casual lifestyle of Portlanders. Because the city of Portland is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, we chose to implement technical features on the shoe that not only achieve a great look, but also enhance the functionality of the shoe. The honey comb rip-stop material on the shoe, which resembles Compound’s signature logo, also provides lightweight durability and toughness. The 3M used on the back heel and Compound logo provides an added safety feature for trekking, running, and cycling around the city… activities which are part of everyday life here in the NW. With Compound’s version of the Adidas ZX500, we have created a simple, yet complex in attention-to-detail shoe that appeals to both the sneaker aficionado and the everyday person.

I received some awesome new art today. Weenie, the little girl of Chris from Compound, gave me this super cool piece. It's called "The Water House". The roof is made of glass, so you can see the stairs. The balcony is also made of glass. You can catch halibut and salmon only. It's my new favorite art.

Evan Harris Opening Night

Opening night for Evan Harris was amazing. One of the biggest crowds of the year. Only a few paintings remain. Evan is extremely talented. We are lucky to have artists of this caliber in the Northwest. A big thanks to everyone who came out. The Compound site will be updated tonight with pictures from the show and the art.

Super Opening for Ready Set Go

Thursdays opening was damn good. It's always great when you have a small group show and everyone gets some action. Each artist has their unique style and they mixed well with the Portland crowd. We were real happy that Tatiana Krasovski came up from LA for the show. The Compound website will be updated later tonight with show photos. The virtual tour will be updated mid week. On a side note...... I was discussing this show with another art person in Portland recently. He thought the idea of an all female show was bad. He also thought it was sexist. I explained that the show was not planned as an all female show. I had recently worked with all of these artists and admire each of their works greatly. It was natural to pick my favorites for a summer show. This indicates my personal taste at this time. That's the big secret of how I schedule shows at Compound. I PICK ART THAT I LOVE! I am not trying to impress or gain fame for the gallery by only choosing "famous" artists. I love the idea of supporting the unknown and providing them with a forum to grow. It's about the art. So far it seems to be pretty damn successful. And then I think to myself......... so what if it's an all female show or an all male show or an all Japanese show or any combination............. It's just a big fun experiment. If I like it, I hang it.

Fractal Edge is Over -- Ready Set Go starts!

Fractal Edge is over. I took down the show today. There was so much time invested in the show. I am sad to see it close. I feel like I lived the show for two months. Hosting the artists at my home. Some of the art being created at my home. Sponsors flying over from Tokyo. Crazy times. Now, onto the next show............

This show looks so good. These 5 ladies did an amazing job. If you are in Portland, come by and check it out.

OBAMA 08 - Feels so good

This is not an art related post. I apologize. I feel like I witnessed a historical moment today. Presidential candidate Barack Obama held a rally in Portland today. I was lucky enough to attend. I stood 20 or 30 feet from quite possibly the first African American president of the United States. It felt good. Oregon will be a deciding factor in a history making presidential race. It feels good. Over 70,000 Oregonians came to see him speak. His message seems simple. Don't lie to the people. Represent the people. Make a better America. It feels very good.
